Ein Säckchen Hirnplopps #3

Grafik by my dear friend Thani

It’s been a while since I wrote a Säckchen Hirnplopps. That’s why there are some thought snippets from the first half of the year which were waiting quite a while for the „Säckchen“ (a small bag) to be full so that I feel ready to write a post eventually.

  • 2021 is a disappointing year regarding public holidays because a lot of them fall on a Sunday. Nonetheless there were some dates which I was very fond of:
    • In my opinion (and also some other’s), this year’s Februrary was a beautiful month regarding the week days! February, having 28 days, started on a Monday and ended on a Sunday accordingly . That meant that the first day of February was also the first day of the week and the same holds true for the last day. This is calendric perfection and beauty to me!
    • The date 12.02.2021 is a palindrome. Wait, I write it without any delimiters: 12022021. It doesn’t matter whether I’m reading the date from left to right or vice versa, the date stays the same (12th February 2021).
    • 4.3.21 is beautiful, too, isn’t it?
  • Let’s go on with palindromes (Do I like palindromes? Maybe.) When I was waiting for my tea water to boil, it occured to me that the german word RETTER (saviour) is a palindrome.
  • The german word MOOS and the english translation of that word – MOSS – are very alike. Both start with the letter M and contain the letter O and the letter S. While the O is doubled in the german word, it’s the S for the english word. And due to the doubled O instead of the doubled S in the german word, the pronunciation is completely different from a german perspective (due to the double O, the vowel is pronounced elongated whereas with a double S, the O is pronounced very short – german grammar). There’s some kind of symmetry and it’s fascinating to me. And I hope anybody understands what I’m trying to say – it’s complicated.
